A South Dakota legislative panel has started a study of the state’s domestic abuse laws, but didn’t get around to discussing whether its protections should cover people in abusive same-sex relationships.

The study was prompted after the House and Senate couldn’t agree this legislative session on whether same-sex couples should be protected by the domestic abuse law, killing a bill that would have more clearly defined who is protected.
