The Internal Revenue Service has released its annual “Dirty Dozen” list of tax scams, advising taxpayers to be aware of identity theft, phishing scams and several other red flags that can cause financial mayhem.
Tax fraud can strike any day of the week, but the IRS noted that there’s an uptick when individuals are trying to prepare their taxes during the filing season. "This tax season, the IRS has stepped up its efforts to protect taxpayers from a wide range of schemes, including moving aggressively to combat identity theft and refund fraud," Acting Commissioner Steven Miller said in a statement. "The Dirty Dozen list shows that scams come in many forms during filing season.”
