Thirteen Tips to Organize Your South Dakota Estate Plan

Here are thirteen tips that will help you to organize your estate plan. 

1.  Gather the current names and addresses of your loved ones.

2.  Make a list of your assets and liabilities

3.  Determine how your assets are titled (joint tenancy, tenancy in common, other?).

4.  Gather important papers like:  deeds, details concerning prepaid funeral expenses, contact information for your personal representative, accountant, investment counsel and insurance agent, previous will and trust documents, and copies of loans and debts.

5.  Determine whom you want to inherit your property.

6.  Determine if you want to make any specific bequests (charities, church, friends?).

7.  Plan for contingencies if a loved one dies before you.

8.  Determine whom you want to serve as your Personal Representative.

9.  Determine whom you want to serve as your successor Personal Representative.

10. If you have minor children, determine whom you want to serve as your children's guardian.

11. If you have minor children, determine if you need to create a trust for your children.

12. Determine whom you want to serve as the trustee of your children's trust.

13. Determine whom you want to serve as the successor trustee of your children's trust.
