During the past century, South Dakota’s business reputation has undergone a major makeover, and new Secretary of State Shantel Krebs wants to capitalize on it.

South Dakota in 2013 was named the top state for business by cable television channel CNBC. Such high esteem was inconceivable in the early 1900s, according to Augustana College historian Robert Wright, author of a new essay that offers a blunt assessment of South Dakota's early reputation.
