In the next few weeks, school boards throughout South Dakota will be conducting their annual July organizational meetings.
Here are a few tips for administrators and school board members regarding these annual meetings.
Tip #1 - When is a school board’s annual meeting held?
A school board’s annual meeting must be held on the second Monday of July unless otherwise designated by the board at the prior regular meeting.
Tip #2 - What actions are taken at the school board’s annual meeting?
At the annual meeting, the school board must organize by electing a president and a vice president who serve until the next annual meeting. The school board must also designate the school's attorney, the depository or depositories and the custodians of all accounts, and the school district’s legal newspaper.
Tip #3 - What constitutes a quorum of the school board?
A majority of the school board’s members constitutes a quorum for the purpose of conducting business.
Tip #4 - When is a school board’s regular meeting held?
A school board’s regular meeting must be on the second Monday of each month unless otherwise designated by the board at the annual meeting.
Tip #5 - Does an individual school board member have the authority to take official action on the board’s behalf?
No. A school board is only empowered to act as a corporate body and no individual board member has any authority to take official action on the board’s behalf.
Tip #6 - Under what circumstances may a special meeting of a school board be held?
A special meeting of a school board may be held upon the call of the president, or in the president’s absence, by the vice-president, or a majority of the board members.
